Will BRAZIL play the NETHERLANDS, or will it be CHILE ?

– – – – – Tell me!

I think BRAZIL will beat CHILE tonight by 3 goals to 1.

BUT, you might think differently, so please shout me down, or blow your vuvuzelas loudly for Chile.

If I am right, then BRAZIL will play NETHERLANDS in Port Elizabeth in the Quarter-finals.

Should that happen, who will win?

Hmmmm?  Am off to think about it, but at first thought, I reckon it will be Brazil. (Phew! Now I’m going to be in trouble with my buddies who are massive fans of the Dutch, waving their ORANGE flags and ORANGE vuvuzelas! But, hey – they’ll get over it, I think!)

If I’m right that Brazil beats Chile, then I’m putting my ‘green and gold’ head on the line and saying Brazil will beat the Netherlands, probably 2-1.

But – we’ll have to wait and see.  I’m getting ahead of myself here.

What do you think?  Post your comments and let’s debate.

B-U-T…you have to agree.  FIFA’s 2010 World Cup in sunny South Africa is getting really, really interesting!

CHILE vs. BRAZIL – Who will SAMBA in SOUTH AFRICA tonight?

…….Hmmm?   I really, really want Chile to win tonight, because I always support the ‘under-dog team’…especially when my own team from South Africa is not playing.  LOL!

But hey? Sorry, Chile.  Not this time.

I believe that BRAZIL will samba in Johannesburg tonight and millions around the world will rock to the result!

So – I have to predict a 3-1 win for BRAZIL.

And my reason is simple…in the last 10 years, Brazil has beaten Chile 8 times, drawn once and lost once.  Chile lost the last 2 matches between these great South American football playing nations, 1-4 and 2-4.

Sorry, Chilean supporters, but the big, big team of this World Cup has B-I-G plans.  They wanna win, and win BIG time!    (After all, they are the HOST NATION for the FIFA World Cup in 2014.)

They want to be there because they are the “defending nation” and NOT because they are the “host nation”.

A young South African friend of mine was born in Chile and he lived there for most of his young life. (Now he lives in Cape Town.)   As I write, he is tweeting madly and chatting on Facebook with all his buddies in Chile.  They all have such high hopes and I feel for them.

Gawd! I wish their dreams could come true, so I dare not phone him to wish him luck.  I think he’ll slam the phone down on me!

I know what it’s like, because we shouted so hard and dreamed so high for South Africa, but – it was not to be!

So – my special parting words to Chile are this:
Thank you for coming to South Africa.  Thank you for playing with heart and soul. And I’m sorry, that in this knock-out stage, 2 wonderful teams from beautiful South America have to enter the football bull-ring against each other.

I hope to see Chile in Brazil in 4 years time!

Meantime…Viva BRAZIL.  Viva 2014!  And I hope you give the world as spectacular a football tournament then, as we think we have done now, here in sunny Mzansi *.
(*South Africans all call our wonderful country by this special name, informally – it refers to “the south”, and we are from “the south” of Africa!)

Spain vs. Chile – AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE?

This is going to be a fabulous match.  I can feel it.  45 million Spaniards loudly blowing their vuvuzelas in Europe and about 17 million Chileans blowing even harder in Santiago and beyond.

Let’s look at the group history: Switzerland beats Spain 1-0, but Chile then beats the Swiss 1-0.  However, to make things more complex, Chile beat Honduras 1-0 and, a few days later, Spain went on to beat Honduras 2-0.

Eish! I’m very glad I’m not a bookmaker, because how do you work out who will win and who will lose?  So, for me – being this old white boy who lives and loves Africa passionately – some research was needed.

I found a witch-doctor who threw some bones.

Here is the prediction:
SPAIN beat CHILE: 2-1

So, I smiled and rubbed my hands and then asked this lady witch-doctor about what would happen to Switzerland, who were on the same points as Chile.

Again, she rolled the bones and this time her prediction was:
SWITZERLAND beat HONDURAS  2-1

Then I did some quick calculations. Who would go through to the knock-out stage, based on goal averages, since Chile and Switzerland would be compelety equal.

So I asked her again what the final Group stage outcome would be.  She smiled, and said I had run out of ‘witch-doctor’ credits.  I blushed, and left the room.

As I walked outside, I heard the witch-doctor’s next client whisper to her husband: “I think it’s chilly, darling. Don’t you?”

So I’m off to learn “Himno Nacional de Chile” so I can root loud and strong for them, in vuvuzela-land!

Should we get ready to Samba?

As a South African, I’m just lovin’ this World Cup!

As an African, I cried when Brazil beat Cote d’Ivoire last night, but then I heard great reports this morning of Brazilian fans teaching our African brothaz and sistaz to SAMBA at Soccer City and around Soweto after the game.

My buddies from Bloemfontein said the same thing happened there after the great win by Paraguay yesterday.

This is what makes this tournament all so vibrant and utterly spectacular!  Different peoples from around the world, singing and dancing and blowing their vvuvzelas like crazy for the ‘beautiful game’.

I’ve read much criticism in the European media about the noise and the exuberance of our local and international fans at the games. But, hey – this is Africa, and no one understands this better than our fellow “southerners” of the world, the South Americans!

So I say – bring it on, people of the south.  This is Mzansi, and we LOVE being from the south!

Good luck to Honduras and Chile today. (I know Mexico and Honduras aren’t shown in our blog image, but they’re all there…in spirit!)

Methinks we Africans need to learn to Samba quickly, ‘coz that looks like where some of the real winners are coming from!  And Brazil 2014 is looking really, really exciting!
